What are Doshas ?

Ayurveda believes that just like all matter on earth, each human body comprises five elements: air, fire, water, earth and ether, also known as space. Each individual holds a combination of all these elements in a certain proportion called DOSHAS, which are foundational concepts of the ancient science, Ayurveda. There are three doshas called Vata, Pitta and Kapha.

VATA is air and ether, PITTA is fire and water, and KAPHA is water and earth.

Learning your unique dosha combination is easy by way of a simple quiz. Understanding your constitution can reveal naturally inherent strengths and illuminate your greatest challenges. While a total understanding of this concept is a long read, let's talk about how it affects your day-to-day health.

Every time you see an uncomfortable symptom in your body like constipation, heartburn, insomnia, monthly cycles etc., it's the body's way of telling you that one of the elements is going into imbalance. It could be Vata, Pitta or Kapha. When these are not taken care of in the beginning, these imbalances can wreak havoc on our health, which can later manifest as disease.

While there are numerous ways of getting the element back, by changing lifestyle, incorporating Yoga, exercise or meditation and making diet changes. We also find Ayurvedic herbs can assist you immensely. These natural plant-based herbs can assist you in pacifying each of the doshas or treat an imbalance created because of it.

Let's give you an example. Ashley has issues with regular elimination, also known as occasional constipation. While it does not bother her on its own, it can also bring burps, gas, abdominal bloating, heartburn etc. In general, she would treat this by buying an OTC product for the specific symptom. While it helps her immediately and provides relief, the cause for Ashley's constipation remains unaddressed.

Now, let's look at it from an Ayurvedic perspective. The colon is seen as the seat of Vata. Several bowel diseases start as Vata imbalances, even if later fueled by Pitta or Kapha issues. Triphala, an ayurvedic herb, has a balancing effect on the wind of your digestive tract. It can not only get things moving, but it also improves the general health of the gut. This completely natural plant-based product is working on balancing Vata, not just relieving the symptom.
